You’ve booked family photos at the beach, you’ve prepped outfits, and you’re counting down the days, but of course, the forecast calls for clouds?! Before you start stressing, here’s a secret: cloudy days might just be better for beach photos. Soft skies, even light, and fewer crowds can turn an overcast day into pure magic. Here’s why I love shooting on moody beach days and why you might, too.
Why Cloudy Weather is Great for Family Photos
Cloudy beach days actually give us some of the best light for photos. No squinting, no harsh shadows — just soft, even light that works like a natural filter. It’s one of the reasons I never stress when the forecast isn’t full sun. In fact, overcast beach sessions usually end up being some of my favs. The mood feels relaxed, the colors pop, and families tend to feel more comfortable when they’re not sweating or dealing with blinding sun.
Should You Reschedule If the Forecast Looks Gloomy?
Unless it’s pouring rain or super windy, I say keep the date. Cloudy skies do NOT mean bad photos, they often mean better ones. The light is super flattering and there’s something about those moody, soft-toned skies that just feel extra dreamy. If you’re not sure, always reach out — but know that “gloomy” weather often delivers the most beautiful surprises.
Real Session: Butterfly Beach on a Cloudy Day
Southern California beaches are kind of known for having random days of overcast/gloom, especially in the mornings or early evenings. That soft, hazy light is actually what I love! It creates the dreamiest, most flattering light which is ideal for family photos.
One of my recent fav’s is from a recent family session in Santa Barbara at Butterfly Beach on a totally overcast but totally gorgeous afternoon. I remember texting with mom before the session because she was concerned about the clouds. Think of clouds like a natural shade plus they make the whole vibe feel calm and cozy in the best way. We played in the sand, wandered along the shoreline, and ended up with some of the most natural, love-filled family photos at the beach…all under a sky that most people would’ve rescheduled for.
